In the converter shop of a major steel plant in Xingtai, Hebei, automated equipment now handles most of the work, yet 57-year-old senior foreman Li Jianguo still stands by the furnace platform every day. By eyeing the color and shape of the flame he can judge the molten-steel temperature to within a few degrees—an “ace skill” tempered in furnace light that no smart system can fully replicate.
“I entered the mill at 18 and have spent my life with this flame,” Li says, wiping sweat from his face, pride in his eyes. “In the past we relied entirely on veteran masters—ladling out metal to watch the skin form. It was risky and back-breaking. Today the data are crystal-clear on a screen, so young people learn much faster.”
Yet rapid technology brings new challenges. Younger operators are comfortable with keyboards and graphs, but the “feel” and “eye” born of long experience are fading. How to pass on this intangible spirit of craftsmanship has become a fresh task for traditional steelworks.
The plant has introduced a “dual-mentor” training model: every newcomer is paired with an engineer who teaches theory and technology, and with a master craftsman who hands down hands-on know-how. Li Jianguo is one of the most popular mentors. He shows youngsters how to cope with sudden equipment failures and, more importantly, instills a meticulous, ever-improving “artisan’s heart.”
From the roaring open-hearth to the computer-controlled converter, and onward to tomorrow’s green electric furnace, the “theme” of steelmaking keeps changing, but the core of resilience, dedication and responsibility remains. It is this legacy that guarantees China’s steel backbone stays strong no matter how technology evolves. The furnace light reflects not only one generation’s youth, but also the endless future of an entire industry.
