Workplace Safety – Smart Tech Builds an Invisible Shield: Steelmakers Enter the Digital-Safety Era

Molten metal at 1 600 °C, pressurised gases, 120 km/h rolling lines… steelmaking has always been high-risk. At Shougang Jingtang’s integrated mill, however, an IoT + 5G + big-data safety platform now weaves an unseen but stronger shield around the plant.
Inside the safety-command centre a wall-sized screen streams the status of every major hazard source, environmental readings and the real-time location of every employee. “If someone enters a danger zone or CO exceeds the limit, the system alarms and triggers an automatic emergency response,” says safety director Yang Fan while demonstrating the console. “Manual rounds used to leave blind spots and delays; we now have 24/7 intelligent coverage.”
On the rolling shop floor, workers wear smart helmets. Beyond standard protection, each helmet hides sensors and a camera. A slip or motionless posture triggers an instant alert; during complex maintenance, remote experts see exactly what the wearer sees, cutting the number of people exposed to high-risk tasks.
The “smart-safety” network spans the full route from blast furnace to finishing mill. Data models mine historical incidents and near-misses to forecast potential hotspots, shifting the paradigm from “after-the-fact” to “before-it-happens”.
“Safety is the ‘1’, everything else is the ‘0’s that follow,” Yang stresses. “Digital tools don’t replace human stewardship; they free people from repetitive checks so energy can go into better rules and stronger safety mind-sets.” This human-centred, tech-empowered safety theme is reshaping steel’s culture and giving workers’ lives a more robust guarantee.
